I'm sure most of us have made promises we did not keep. I promised my sister I would be there to dance with her in my Dad's place at her wedding. Instead, I was in prison and that broken promise still hurts us. I presume most of us have also had promises made to us which were broken. Try to remember how that felt. I remember my Dad missing events like birthdays because he was working and those absences still bother me. We can find broken promises in the Bible too. Remember this one? "Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!" (Mt. 26:35) All the disciples promised Jesus that.
But the most encouraging parts of the Bible are the promises God makes to us and we can hope in them because He cannot lie (Heb. 6:18). The Bible contains hundreds of them. John 14 alone says this: Truly, truly I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it...And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. You know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you (12, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18). There are four promises right there.
Jesus ascended to prepare a place for us but He really didn't leave. He promised never to leave us (Heb. 13:5). His Spirit is still in us and He promised He would come back (Jn. 14:1-3). Jesus is the Amen (Rev. 3:14) and in Him all God's promises find their yes (2 Cor. 1:20). Let us say Amen to God for His glory!
