My Granny & Aunties

Writer's picture: Christopher McLaurinChristopher McLaurin

My Grandmother:Ms. Irene "Granny" McLaurin, God rest her soul and My Aunties, Adrian God Rest Her Soul, Cheryl, Jeanette AKA Pat-Pat, Joanne, and Karen. If it truly takes a village to raise a child then the aforementioned ladies are it. Strong, smart, hardworking, loving, caring, nurturing, motherly. All of these words describe the women I've chose to highlight with this post. My Granny was the matriarch, the head of our family, and I miss her so much it hurts. She's been gone for 15 years now but even as I write this tears are falling from my eyes because the pain of losing the woman who loved me like I was her own never goes away and always feels as if it just occurred. I can still hear her voice, can still feel her touch, can still smell her. I can still remember her morning routine and see her moving around the house from room to room. She would see my cousins and I off to school and be there waiting for us when we returned. My Granny was a mother to everyone in our family and I will never forget my time spent with her. I am truly a "Grannies Boy" and only a man from my family can truly understand what that means.

My Aunties are the most amazing and dynamic group of women you will ever meet. Each one strong willed and fully capable of chastising and disciplining when need be but also tenderhearted, caring, compassionate, and loving. They are women I know I can call on at a moments notice for help, advice, or just to talk. By them I know I'm loved and cherished, I know they will always have my back, and are always in my corner. They are women who are a blessing to me and I'm so thankful that I had the fortune to have been under the watchful eyes of so many extraordinary women. My mom and her sisters are a gift from God that I could never thank Him enough for. I could never ask for a better group of women in my life nor would I want to. Aunt Cheryl, Aunt Pat-Pat, Aunt Joanne, and Aunt Karen, I love you guys, thank you for being so amazing.
