Looking for Loopholes by Matthew Byars

Writer's picture: Christopher McLaurinChristopher McLaurin

(Romans 6:23) How many if us spend time in the library learning the law and researching cases? Some of us are over there everyday and even have legal books in our cells. Some of us constantly have paperwork and petitions into the court. Even though most of us are guilty, we look for ways to reduce our punishment or erase it completely.

We're looking for loopholes. The American Heritage Dictionary defines a loophole as a way of escaping a difficulty; especially by way of an omission or ambiguity, as in the wording of a contract or law, that provides a means of evasion. That means that a loophole is a technicality that makes it possible to escape the intended consequence. A brother told me the day I wrote this that every case has a loophole. Most of us have broken the law, been judged, and are serving punishment but we continue to look for loopholes-ways out if it. Let's look at this concept spiritually now. All of us have broken God's law. Romans 6:23 says so. 1 John 1:8 goes on to call anyone a liar if they claim to have never sinned. So to God we all caught the same case. The Innocence Project can't get us out of this one. Romans 6:23 goes on to say that the penalty for sin is death. The good news is that before we sinned God gave us a sort of loophole. This one isn't buried in a dusty book or a confusing computer system. The Bible says clearly that God sent His Son to pay the death penalty we owed. The most generous man among us may volunteer to do time for someone we love but would any of us send our child to pay the combined penalty of all the prisoners in the world? Even if we would, the life sentence of our child would not be sufficient. God did it though. Jesus took our death penalty. Now, the second half of Romans 6:23 tells us that the free gift of God is eternal life. We don't have to pay a jailhouse lawyer all of our commissary or an attorney our life savings. Eternity is quite a bit longer than any of our earthly sentences. Men, I'm telling you that all you have to do is accept the free gift and you can do it right now. Accept Jesus as Lord and Savior and evade the consequence of hell for eternity. I encourage the men who have already made that decision to live in the light of His love sacrifice and tell someone else about the only loophole we need to find that has eternal significance
