Lately, during this pandemic, we have been asked to wear facemasks for a couple of reasons. First, we wear them to protect ourselves. This virus like many others can be transmitted through the air. If we have a facemask on, it helps us not to breathe in what is bad for us. Second, we wear the facemasks to protect others. If we're the ones who are sick, even if we don't feel sick, wearing a facemask protects others from us. These facemasks that we wear daily reminded me of a Scripture. Proverbs 13:3 says "whoever guards his mouth preserves his life." Spiritually, we can use this facemask as a reminder of the power of what we say. The Bible is full of references to the power of our tongues and admonitions about how to use them. If we have our spiritual facemasks on we can protect ourselves because "it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person." (Mt. 15:11) Our own tongues can stain our whole bodies (Jas. 3:6). Our spiritual facemasks, like our physical ones, also protect others. What comes out of our mouths can corrupt others so we are commanded to say only what builds people up and gives grace in Ephesians 4:29. So while we're annoyed by having to wear these facemasks for our protection and that of others, let's use them as a reminder to ask God everyday like David to "set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips." (Ps. 141:3)
