DO NOT BE AFRAID; ONLY BELIEVE, PART 2

Writer's picture: Christopher McLaurinChristopher McLaurin

"Do not be afraid; only believe." Mark 5:36 (NKJV)

Components of Belief #2

Component 2 -- Humble Submission -- (Mark 5:22,23) "And Behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name, and when he saw [Jesus], he fell at his feet and begged him earnestly..." Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, a man of status, a man of importance, who was more than likely used to being shown a certain level of respect, came in a show of humility. He bowed himself at Jesus' feet and begged him earnestly to come to his aid. In doing so, he placed himself in a position of submission to the power and will of Christ.

At that exact moment, Jairus understood that who he was, what he had, and the position he held meant absolutely nothing. He came to Christ totally void of any sense of entitlement, pride or ego. The Bible tells us there was a great multitude gathered around Jesus at that time, but Jairus could have cared less about what prying eyes saw. He knew he needed the help of one greater than himself and so he came to Jesus, bowed to him, and begged him earnestly. By doing this, Jairus relinquished any power he thought he had over his life and yielded himself to the power and authority of Jesus. This is a perfect example of humble submission, one that we need to follow.

Our Lord loves us. He love us more than we will ever be able to understand with our finite minds. He wants to do for us all of the things that are within his will for our lives. But, he is going to do it on his terms, not ours; his terms say that we must be willing to submit to his authority and accept his will for our lives. So, today, let us forget about who we are and remember whose we are. Let us disregard any imagined power we might think we have in, and over, our lives. Let us not fool ourselves into thinking our Lord is impressed with titles and achievements when what he really desires is humble submission. Today, and every day from here on out, let us show our Lord and Savior that we understand how desperately we truly need him in every area of our lives. Let us fall down at his feet and beg him earnestly.

Prayer for the Day: Almighty God, help us to humble ourselves before your throne. Enable us to stop trying to control what we have no control over and let you be in control of our lives. It is not easy, Lord, because we would rather tell you what we want, rather than listen to what you want for us. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
